There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling den betting is banned. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and even though visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel compound that contains a number of luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machine games and 88 table games.
