There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is banned. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent destination, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are for all intents and purposes needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most borders.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge casino, features 150 slots and 60 table games. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around resort and hotel compound that features many conveniences on top of the gambling den, which contains ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight table games.
