There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is not legal. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and though visas are allegedly required to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling hall, features 150 slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel compound that highlights many luxuries on top of the gambling den, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight table games.
