There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where casino gaming is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are situated in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge casino, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel compound that features many conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
